The university has a very good network of 27 research stations spread over 5 different agro-climatic zones having 82 non-plan schemes funded by State Govt., 45 AICRPs on different crops /plant sciences and one Centrally Sponsored Research Schemes funded by the Central Govt., Ministry of Agriculture, where varietal development and technology verification of more than 100 crops (cereals, pulses, oilseeds, vegetable , cash crops protected cultivation , exotic vegetables and fruit crops) is being carried out. In addition to this management of natural resource management, development of integrated farming system model research is undertaken for the upliftment of resource poor farming community.
To improve production and productivity of cereals, pulses, oilseeds, sugarcane, cotton, fruits, vegetables, flowers and farm animals. To conserve natural resources and improve their efficiency for sustainable production of crops and animal produce. Conservation of genetic resource and their maintenance.
To develop technology with integrated pest, disease and nutrient management to increase production for making agricultural production cost effective and sustainable. To develop post-harvest technology for minimizing post-harvest losses and production of value-added products. To design and develop farm implements and technology for mechanization of agriculture. To evaluate and modify technology for protected cultivation of flowers and vegetables.
Taking into consideration the availability of land, water and weather conditions and other existing resources, the university has concentrated its efforts to develop suitable technologies for dryland agriculture, irrigated farming as well as hi-tech agriculture. During the last 53 years, the University has developed about 39 different types of Farm Implements and Machineries for the ease of sowing, transplanting, burring, interculturing and harvesting operations on the farms and 270 improved / F1 hybrids varieties of field crops, forages, vegetables, horticultural and ornamental crops, cash crops, spices, aromatic and medicinal plants and also registered pure breeds of cattle-Khillar, goat-Osmanabadi & Sangamneri, sheep-Deccani and buffalo-Pandharpuri with NBAGR, Karnal, and one Phule Trivni cattle breed , etc. More than 1577 crop production technologies pertaining to agro-techniques, soil and water management, farming and cropping systems, integrated nutrient, water, pest, disease management, post harvest technology, farm machinery, etc are developed and recommended for productivity improvement. The university has focused its attention on location specific and need based research activities and also seed production and seedlings/saplings activities on large scale in order to cater the needs of all types of farmers and farming groups. Organic farming, crop diversification, development of transgenic and export oriented quality production and post harvest handling and process engineering are the priority areas to face the challenges of WTO regime. Biotechnology with its vast potential and challenges is important to agricultural development. This university is developing biotechnological competence in the areas of plant tissue culture, genetic engineering, molecular biology, and molecular characterization for IPR issues, biocontrol and biofertilizers.
