From Vice-Chancellor's Desk

" In the last three years of responsibility as Vice Chancellor of MPKV, Rahuri, we have been able to start many new initiatives in the University inspite of several challenges. The contribution of MPKV in achieving the record pulses production through seed hubs is worth noting. Several other New initiatives like plastic free, clean and green campus as a part of Swachhta Abhiyan, watershed activity with the help of Aadarsh Gaon Yojana of Shri. Popatraoji Pawar in almost 2650 acres of barren land near ‘E’ block followed by tree plantation are worth mentioning.
During the golden jubilee year of the University (2018-19), we have been able to introduce research on new crop species which were not there in the University viz., bamboo research, introduction of dragon fruit and fodder cactus and initiating research on quinova & litchi is a good move. After successful accreditation of the University and the constituent colleges, a new mega project on CAAST for Climate Smart Agriculture under National Higher Education Programme of ICAR through World Bank funding has been a feather in the cap of the University.
Visits of dignitaries like Hon’ble Governor, Hon’ble Finance Minister and Hon’ble Agriculture Minister and their appreciation about the University’s work has motivated our scientists to continue their efforts for doing good work in pursuit of farmers welfare.
MPKV has been taking a lead role in doubling of farmers income by 2022, which is the dream and call of our Hon’ble Prime Minister. Integrated Farming System Model developed by MPKV, Rahuri for Western Maharashtra region & live demonstrations of doubling farmers income within the University Campus has received good appreciation from all the dignitories and thousands of farmers who visited the campus. Release of crop varieties and technologies in the last three years has added up to the total number of varieties & technologies by MPKV to 263 crop varieties and 1518 new technologies & 36 implements. Impact studies of our varieties revealed the modest estimation of impact of just eight crop varieties by MPKV, (Sorghum, Bajra, Chickpea, Paddy, Sugarcane, Pomegranate, Onion, , Acid lime) in the last thirtyeight years was found to be to the tune of 94,839 Crores which has impressed our Hon’ble Finance Minister. As a result, he was kind enough to declare the grant of 151 Crores to the University as against our demand of 101 Crore for infrastructure during Golden Jubilee year of the University.
Kisan Adhar Sammelan which was started in 2017 in MPKV and Shetkari Melawa in all other campuses of the University is getting more appreciation and visibility of the University for the farmers and public which will continue in future also.
Proposal for recognizing Ganeshkhind Gardan as Biodiversity Heritage site in Pune city is still awaiting the approval from State Biodiversity Board. Starting of regional office of PPV & FR anthorties at Agricultural College Campus, Pune is helping all the farmers and breeders those who are involved in conservation of germplasm of crop varieties and developing new crop varieties.
With all these initiatives, still there is too much to accomplish in future for which I appeal the cooperation, commitment & support of all my colleagues, students, farmers & media friends for their constant support. "
