Central Farm

....
Source of revenue generation

Introduction : The central campus at Rahuri is the seat of the Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth which provides agricultural facilities relating to land and cultivation of crops. The central campus farm is established in 1968 with the acquisition of the land from adjoining villages. The farm area is situated in revenue limits of villages viz., Rahuri (Kd), Khadambe, Sade, Digraj, Pimpri Awaghad, Varvandi of Rahuri Tahsil. The Director of Farms with the help of supervising staff, security officer and labour welfare officer manages the cultivation of different crops on the entire land except the land for research under the immediate control of Hon. Vice-Chancellor.

Aims and Objectives :

  1. Provide facilities to the staff and students for research in agriculture, agricultural engineering, and forestry.
  2. Provide facilities for imparting instructions in agricultural education.
  3. Demonstrate the improved methods of cultivation of crops and different agro-techniques to the farmers.
  4. To impart training to extension workers and to transfer the technology generated at the university level.

    Soil and Climate
As per the soil survey the farm has approximately 35% shallow soils with depth ranging from 10 to 25 cm, 25 % medium soils with soil depth as 25 to 40 cm and 40 % deep soils with soil depth more than 90 cm. Fifty two percent of the total area is saline with pH between 8.5 to 9.5 and remaining 48% are alkaline with pH 9.5.

Seed Production : The university has been given a mandate of supplying breeders and foundation seed of various crops. We are proud to mention that we have been able to fulfill the targets assigned by the Govt. to the university. On an average 1847 and 4700 quintals of breeders and foundation seed is produced annually besides large quantity of truthfull seed of improvd varieties of crops and are distributed to the cultivators. The seedlings of various fruit crops like mango, pomegranate, sapota, ber, coconut and guava are raised for commercial purpose. The University nursery at central campus produces seedlings and planting material of flowering, ornamental, medicinal, aromatic plants, forage and vegetable crops which are also made available for sale to farmers.

Developmental activities : Large area at the central campus has lighter soils covering marginal soils, denunded and erroded lands and even the lands exposed to rock which is not suitable for growing the crops. During last decade more that 400 hectares of land have been brought under cultivation at the central campus farm and the massive tree planting programme was launched. This has served as a model for utilisation of barren and denunded lands. In recognition of the works the Govt. of Maharashtra honoured the university by presenting 'Vanashree' award in the year 1992.
